There is Another Way - #anotherway - is a network of teachers and educators. We believe that high-stakes accountability is leading to burnout, low morale, and disillusionment with the profession teachers and support staff once loved. Teachers and headteachers are leaving in unprecedented numbers to save their mental health. One-third of Early Career Teachers leave within 5 years. Recruiting teachers has never been so challenging.
We know that the DfE and Ofsted narrative that the way to raise standards and achieve results is to monitor, inspect, judge, observe and scrutinise is false.
We know because there are schools that have taken the other way and achieved outstanding results. We know because there are schools that have prioritised the wellbeing and mental health of their staff and rejected constant monitoring. We know because children tell us that teachers in those schools are happier, are able to teach with energy and passion and have a greater capacity to take care of them.
The Start of the Journey
There is Another Way
Headteacher Online Conference
Friday 3rd July 2020
25 headteachers who believe in the 'other way' came together to share ideas. They discussed the vision and aims of the #theotherway network and how to publicise them. They proposed strategies for an action plan which would launch in September 2020 for the year ahead.
Out of the challenges, sadness, grief and suffering of Corona Virus emerged a roadmap for leading schools with heart. Where a culture of staff wellbeing and mental health is the foundation of success. Where collaborative professional development replaces hierarchical judgement. Where teachers are trusted. Where they are given back control of their own professionalism. Where they are nurtured and taken care of.
Jeremy Hannay: Conference Keynote
'What is the soil like in your school?'
'...there is no pupil well-being. There is no pupil collaboration, there is no pupil inquiry. There is no pupil development, growth, challenge, in any kind of meaningful, long term, sustainable way unless we are putting our adults meaningfully in that situation first. We cannot expect our adults to go into classrooms and involve the students of children in incredible learning experiences where they're facilitating collaboration, connected learning,
dialogic talk...We cannot expect that of our teachers. If they have not experienced it first...
'We've got this narrative of children first. Children first. Children first. But actually, it's an unconventional thought that we need to put our adults in a position where they have had meaningful experiences before they try to enact those with the children...'
'...When I started at Three Bridges, if we'd have asked teachers what it was they did at the school, they would have said that they were stone cutters. They would have said they were coming in every day, shifting rocks, cutting, shifting, cutting, shifting. That's what they were there to do. My job was to help them turn into cathedral builders...'

The There is Another Way Vision and Action Plan (#theotherway)
The There is Another Way (#theotherway) conference team has now produced The Vision and Action Plan. It is set out below.
£500 Conference Donation to Education Support
The charity Education Support has a 24-hour helpline staffed by counsellors, dedicated to supporting teachers who need help. The charity also provides face-to-face counselling and financial support to teachers facing hardship. As the There is Another Way conference had to move online because of Corona Virus, we donated 50% of the ticket price, which would have paid for our lunch, to the charity.
